New York, NY (October 1, 2015) – Met Music Director James Levine conducts his first opera of the company’s current season, Wagner’s Tannhäuser, beginning October 8. Otto Schenk’s 1977 production, which has not been seen at the Met since 2004, stars Johan Botha in his company role debut as the title character; Eva-Maria Westbroek as Elisabeth, adding another Wagner heroine to her Met repertoire after her company debut as Sieglinde in Die Walküre; Michelle DeYoung reprising her role as the goddess Venus, which she sang in the last Met staging of the work; Peter Mattei as Wolfram, following his recent success in Wagner’s Parsifal; and Günther Groissböck as the Landgraf. The final performance of Tannhäuser, the October 31 matinee, will be transmitted worldwide as part of the tenth season of the Met’s Live in HD series, which now reaches more than 2,000 movie theaters in 70 countries around the world.
